Effect of Propagation Methods and Cultivars on Cut flower quality and Shoot Development of Roses (Rosa hybrida) Cultivated on the Rock Wool in Winter


Abstract
Ten cultivars of cut roses (Rosa hybrida) propagated either by grafting or cutting were used to investigate the cut flower quality and shoot development under the low light intensity in winter. All plants were cultivated on the rock wool and data collections were made from late December in 1986 to late March in 1987. There was no significant difference between grafting and cutting in the number of days for bud break and flowering after decapitation, ratio of flower-bearing shoot and flower quality in ten cultivars. `Tineke¢¥ and `Ilona¢¥ were inferior to other cultivars in the ratio of flower-bearing shoot and the speed of bud break. Correlation coefficient between the speed of bud break and the number of days for flowering after decapitation was r=0.515 in December and r=0.768 in January decapitation.
